Bearers of Light

 • Series: Advent 2024: Let There Be Light

Have you recovered? The wrapping, and unwrapping, is complete. Christmas meals have been cooked and eaten. Family and friends have gathered and left. Special Church services have come and gone, leaving behind an afterglow of candlelight and “heaven-on-earth” sacredness. It’s around this time every year that I find myself thinking, “now what?” The long-promised Messiah has come. Jesus, Emmanuel, lives in and through us. And … our world is still the same world; people are still beautiful and broken, and God’s call on our lives to bring light and hope remains. Howard Thurman puts it like this: The Work of Christmas When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flocks, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among the people, to make music in the heart.
